Legends Cup IV Begins – July 5, 2013
Brief Tournament History
In 2010, Club Penguin Army Central ran the first edition of the Legends Cup tournament. Some of the participants included the Army of Club Penguin, Doritos of Club Penguin, Nachos, Ice Warriors, Dark Warriors, Watex Warriors, and Rebel Penguin Federation. By the tournament’s end, the Nachos defeated IW to win the first title of the tournament. Additionally, ACP and RPF battled for third place, with the Clover Defenders successfully acquiring third place. However, the next two years saw IW go back-to-back in the second and third versions of the tournament. In the latter, IW defeated Army Republic for their second title and the first two-peat in the tournament’s history. After their second win, they established themselves as a dominant power in major tournaments. Overall, IW and Nachos experienced the most success in the first few LC editions.

State of Community
By mid-2013, there were major army shutdowns and revivals that altered the community. For instance, Hot Sauce Army closed its active generation after six months due to low sizes and several retirements. In the meantime, the Pirates returned and quickly became involved in wars with RPF and DCP. Shortly after, an alliance of AR, Nachos, and WV declared war on DW with multiple invasions scheduled. As a response, DW revived the Black Alliance with Pirates and Special Weapons and Tactics as prominent members. Despite these actions, army withdrawals prevented the conflict from becoming a large-scale alliance war. Subsequently, WV-DW became the main conflict, with a four-day war between the two rivals. The war ultimately ended with a peace deal that benefited both armies and resulted in no official winner. Lastly, the month concluded as RPF declared war on Nachos alongside DCP and ACP.
Announcement of Legends Cup IV
Alongside the Nachos-RPF war, UMA joined the fight as it declared war on the RPF. In one of the first official battle, RPF and UMA fought for control of Tuxedo, the former’s main capital. Due to multiple wars, the upcoming LC tournament challenged armies’ multitasking ability. Next, CPAC announced the fourth edition of the LC tournament on June 29, 2013. Accordingly, the organization invited twenty-four armies, including the eight top-ranked armies’ qualification to the second round. Furthermore, the lower-seeded armies participated in the first round qualifiers. The seed of each army was determined by how the armies did on the Top Tens for Major and Small/Medium armies. Simultaneously, the winner of the tournament received a prize of five thousand xats for their efforts. Finally, the first round times were announced on July 5, 2013, with the smallest armies set to compete.

First Round & Quarter-Finals
In the qualifiers, there were a variety of no-shows and dominant performances that earned armies a spot in the next round. Despite admirable performances, Night Divers and WW lost in two of the closest battles of the round to Light Troops and the Police Department, respectively. Comparatively, Shadow Troops had the highest max and defeated Water Ninjas for a blowout win. Of these armies, most were eliminated in the first round, as only the Chaos of Club Penguin continued on. Subsequently, the quarter-finals included Nachos, DCP, ACP, WV, AR, RPF, IW, DW, and Chaos. In the quarter-finals, most armies maxed 20 or better for very competitive duels. After their first win, Chaos lost in a three-way battle against DW and IW. Equally important, DW upset IW and ended their chances of a three-peat. Lastly, DCP defeated Nachos despite being the lowest seed. In short, the first few rounds featured significant upsets.

Semi-Finals and Grand Finals
Unlike the previous iterations, the losers in the quarter-finals received a second chance for a spot in the finals via the redemption playoffs. Despite their losses, a redemption semi-final took place between armies previously defeated. For instance, Nachos defeated WV in the first battle with 35 penguins online. In the next battle, AR achieved its second win in the tournament against Chaos. After their second losses, both Chaos and WV officially left the tournament with their run over. Lastly, Nachos defeated AR for one of the three spots in the final.

Redemption Finals
Following these battles, the normal semi-finals occurred with ACP’s first loss that took them out of the tournament versus DCP. In the last battle, RPF defeated DW for the second finalist spot. Furthermore, the three-way final concluded the tournament in early August. During the battle, Nachos and RPF had impressive performances while DCP fell behind. In the first half, Nachos and RPF fought each other as DCP stayed out of the room. After the first half concluded, the three armies finally battled each other with Nachos’ standout performance. Ultimately, RPF claimed their first-ever LC title over the two armies.

Legends Cup IV Finals
Conclusion
Throughout the years, Legends Cup persisted as one of the most prestigious tournaments. Likewise, the competition also established Nachos, RPF, and IW all as significant tournament threats. In the case of IW, IW achieved the first two-peat in tournament history. Then, RPF broke through as IW went out early due to a lackluster performance. Despite their loss, IW still proved themselves to be a challenger regardless. Lastly, Chaos was the smallest army to have success in the tournament with their quarter-final finish. Overall, the 2013 tournament made RPF a new dominant force in tournaments. What do you think of IW’s back-to-back wins? What do you think of the Redemption Finals? How would you compare the 2013 edition to other versions of LC?
