Introduction

Operation: Winterstorm is a community map tournament that works as a beta for the new upcoming map, which will fully launch next week. It includes a new economy system and items such as ships, planes, bombs and nukes. The full map will also contain intel and storage. Community members were split into teams of four colours: Black, Blue, Green, Red. The teams aim to be the ones with the most land at the end of the tournament on Sunday. So far, we have seen loads of freeland invasions and several battles, with the intensity rising more and more each day.

For the next 24 hours alone, at the time this post is being written, there are nine invasions scheduled by all four armies. Seven of those are against another team. That is impressive, given that the maximum possible number of battles in a day is eight. We see battles between all teams, but the two largest conflicts right now are between Blue and Green and Red and Black. Four out of nine invasions are between Green and Blue. Also, we saw the first nuke being used today, as Black nuked the Red owned Summit.

Black Team Instability

Not everything goes well for everyone, though. The Black team has found itself defending against two other teams on two fronts. A team that was initially several people’s favor has been found to be struggling. The team was initially led by CladeJustin, and Scars, who held the most votes in the team election, and was the first to schedule invasions as soon as the map opened for the teams. They scheduled a total of three invasions, two of them being freeland and the last one being against the Red team. The Red team was the next to schedule invasions, one of which was against Rainbow, a server owned by Black.

The first invasion to happen was the one declared by the Reds, with it being successful as Black did not show up. Following that, Black successfully invaded Parka, a freeland for which they used a ship after losing connection to it, but then they were not able to max 5 in their freeland invasion of Fiesta, which ended up being unsuccessful. Additionally, the Summit invasion was invalidated as Black did not have adjacent land anymore.

The beginning of leadership changes

All these events brought instability within the Black team, causing Justin and Scars to retire and focus on their army instead. The next two most voted leaders took their place, Alu and Langly, with Alu quitting almost immediately as he was no longer interested. In the meantime, conflicts sparked among the Black team members. Later, Hampter filled the remaining empty spot, as he was the last person who had been interested in becoming a leader.

The following day, today, the turmoil continued with Langly choosing to step down for personal reasons. Throughout the day, the team decided to perform the first nuking, targetting Summit. Later, Subzero stepped up and took her place, with a coup happening as well, and Star taking Hampter’s place. Just a few hours ago, there were two battles taking place, back to back, with both being against Red. In the first one, the battle of the Migrator, the Red team managed to win both rooms, claiming the server. In the later one, the Black team managed to put more resistance, managing to tie a room and losing the other, with their invasion of the North Pole being unsuccessful. Despite being defeated, there has clearly been an improvement under the new leadership.

Club Penguin Armies reached out to the main Black team leader, Clade, to find out more about his team’s intentions and his opinion on the recent events.

How do you feel about the new Black team leadership?

amazing and hopeful
my past experiences with my ex co leaders have been rough this new black team leadership im hoping will be bright and hopful i see major changes in this tournament 😀

What are you planning to do in order to turn the Black-Red war in your favor?

A simple reconstruction and reorganization should do the trick, and we are in good care with an amazing team.

After hearing Clade’s words, we also interviewed one of the Red team leaders, Zooy.

Do you think your team winning battles against Black contributed to their instability?

Yes, but it’s a little more complex than that. We predicted before invasions even started that Black Team would be a lesser threat not due to their size but because of the various personality clashes that existed within the army. A lot of members of Black Team have quite eccentric and outward personalities, which can be good to lead a team, but having too many will often pose a detriment to the cohesion of the team. So, honestly I think Black Team was a ticking time bomb from the start. But, I think if they weren’t instantly hit with a morale crusher of an insane amount of landslide losses from us, they would’ve had a better chance of working things out. Ultimately, we were simply the test, the mantle to which they were put, their instability is not caused by us but only brought to light by us.

The Black team managed to tie a room, in the most recent battle against you, under their new leadership. Does that concern you?

I’ve been complaining that one of our biggest weaknesses is our inability to not fall asleep on these 2-0 battles, so honestly our leadership is excited by the propsect of thrilling battles. Obviously, it’s strategically better to 2-0 someone, but our members have been slowing down in morale… because why would you want to show up to a battle with 17-2? Hannibal was destroyed by an inability to have proper substantial battles, and so if Black Team is finally going to step up, we’re going to appreciate it. We need practice for when we end up facing either Blue or Green, and we also just want to have fun. Ultimately, yes it is a concern, but it’s also a benefit. It’s a speculative risk for us that we have no choice in, but if we had a choice, we’d take it.

(Also their new leadership doesn’t seem to even know they’re actually leading… I think what’s actually boosting them is the fact that they have 2 new troops that aren’t demoralized yet—just wait a few days and they might just give up.)

What was your reaction upon seeing Summit being nuked?

That was a lot of emotions all at once, but mostly just a lot of shock. We both internally discussed at the beginning of the war and recently discussed with Black Team that nukes weren’t economical, and that if it was going to end up like that, it would be strategically optimal to have them cut their losses and make peace—a couple of minutes after we agreed, the nuke dropped. So, most of our reaction was really just confusion concerning what Black Team though they were going to achieve by doing so. There was also the misunderstand by me thinking that the nuke took land due to the similar coloring on the map… which only heightened the stress and confusion. Yet, once a few minutes passed by, we honestly all just calmed down and then stopped caring. It really doesn’t affect us that much, we’re not going to care about Black Team wasting 800 coins so that we’d lose out on 400 coins and it didn’t hit any of our units. Maybe if they hit our planes and ships we’d care, but it genuinely doesn’t have a long-term impact on us. We’ll just take Parka to make up for the lost coins, and eventually take half of Black Team’s coins. We’ll just keep winning invasions and defenses, keep making fire art, and keep growing as a team. Black doesn’t pose a serious threat to use no matter if they have 20 nukes or 0 nukes, it just shows they’re even less of a threat trying to gasp for air to survive, pulling out every option even if not economical or strategically viable—they’re desperate. So in the end, I really do not care. That black nuke effect on the map is the only black staying on the map other than maybe the water. Oh, also one word to Black Team’s leadership: what do you mean by you BOMBED THE WRONG TERRITORY? Cut the lies, we know it wasn’t a “mistake” to attack, it was a miscalculation of your measly power. Your leadership even agrees that it was a miserable choice to make, and you had to coup your co-leader out of regret. Pathetic. Summit remains ours regardless of your nuke.

Would you like to add anything else?

To all in Red Team: We shall encounter many challenges in the days to come, but we must not fret, we can overcome those challenges. We may fail at some invasions, but we must remember how capable we are, we must remember our victories and our achievements. We must remain motivated to do our best and we can only do our best with your help. I love you all guys, let’s win this.

To everyone else: f o r f e i t

It seems like there is much tension between the two teams as of now. The Black team remains with only 5 servers, with 2 of them being invaded tomorrow. Will the Black team be able to turn the tide? How much do you think the new leadership will contribute? Have you liked the community tournament so far? Share your thoughts.
