Over the recent weeks, many armies have been preparing for the October Horrors tournament. Due to the unusual format of last year’s Project Conquest: Blood Bowl, armies know they must be prepared for anything. To test their prowess in battle and have an edge during the tournament, the Water Vikings battled the Army of Club Penguin in a practice battle.

Room 1: Stadium

ACP enters the room first, WV following closely after. The Vikings quickly form a triangle, while ACP makes a V. Initially, both armies went back and forth, exchanging coverage and size appearance. The sizes were 27-22 in favor of the Vikings. Both armies maintain a consistent pace, and both forms are applaudably neat. WV moves first with a waterfall, and ACP defends late. WV takes a moment to then switch into an underlined plus or plane, as ACP rakes the room. ACP then forms an X, which was messy and disproportionate, also heavily covered by WV’s plus. By this time, both armies had significantly slowed down, while their sizes stayed the same.

Both armies move at the same time, ACP bombs and WV rakes. ACP slowly forms a U, while WV makes an underlined V. Despite the slight size disadvantage, ACP was heavily covered for the duration of this form, and WV was barely visible at times. ACP dominated both the chat bar and the edges of the room, giving them a much larger appearance. WV was also noted to have a few AFKs in their form. Due to the given back-and-forth nature of the room, with both armies’ performance drawing each other out, this room was deemed a tie.

Room 2: Docks

The round began with WV making the first move, entering the room, and executing a combined UT + V formation. In response, ACP quickly formed a backwards L. WV looked significantly bigger, with ACP barely visible except on the right side, which also included some AFKs. Control of the chat bar was heavily contested, with both armies battling back and forth throughout the initial minutes. ACP eventually gained enough ground to extend its chat bar coverage across the bottom of the room. At this point, the sizes were 22-26 in favor of WV.

ACP moved with a bomb, which was met by a weak and late defense from WV. ACP followed this by forming an upside-down A, as WV launched their own bomb, though ACP failed to provide any defense for their attack. WV then shifted to a right arrow formation, with AFKs noted along the diagonal edge. Both armies increased their pace. Although WV was slightly faster, ACP showed better completion of their tactical formations. The size disparity returned, with ACP barely visible and WV appearing much larger. Despite the diagonal AFKs, WV’s right arrow was described as very well executed. Sizes were 26-23, still in favor of WV.

ACP then executed a waterfall, which WV countered with a perfectly timed defense. WV followed this up with a rake shortly after, while ACP moved into a UT. ACP’s pace noticeably slowed down following these exchanges. WV closed the active part of the round by forming an exceptionally large A shape. For a period within this formation, the armies looked equally as large, but ACP’s form was notably neater. For better coverage, larger forms, and a more consistent pace throughout the room, WV wins R2.

Room 3: Cove

The third room opened with ACP entering the room first, forming a left angle. WV countered by forming another right arrow. ACP took a moment to refine their initial formation, but once corrected, they immediately dominated the chat bar and stood out visibly. In contrast, WV’s formation was noted as being gappy and messy in several places with uneven lines. ACP then executed a rake, which was met by a weak defense from WV before WV quickly switched into an A-like formation. This ‘A’ was deficient, however, lacking its bottom-left leg. ACP then formed an underlined plus, which effectively covered WV. Sizes were 23 ACP to 27 WV.

At this point, WV looked significantly smaller, despite ACP having some AFKs along the chat bar. As the battle approached its end, WV waterfalled, to which ACP responded with an effective defense, before following up with a bomb of their own. WV made an underlined plus, while ACP made a right arrow. For a while, WV heavily covered ACP’s plus and looked much bigger, before ACP rakes into a UT and WV switches into an X. Coverage goes back and forth, but WV looked bigger. WV undeniably picked it up for the last few minutes of the room; however, it wasn’t enough to outshine ACP’s performance for most of the first 8 minutes. ACP wins Room 3 due to more coverage, cleaner formations, and a mostly larger appearance for most of the room.

Overtime: Iceberg

The overtime room began with WV entering first and immediately forming a plus shape. ACP followed with a U formation that was somewhat small and could have been wider. Both armies’ initial forms were applauded for being exceptionally neat with consistent penguin spacing. Despite both armies maintaining an almost event-level pace, WV looked bigger and covered more area almost consistently. ACP moved first, executing a whirlpool, which WV defended against well. ACP then formed a trident (V-shape with a vertical line), which WV countered with an X formation. The X was overall very neat, despite a gap on the top right, which took a while to get fixed. ACP’s form has AFKs and has a very weak vertical.

ACP moves first again, raking the room, and WV follows up with a whirlpool. The Army of Club Penguin formed an upside-down trident, while it appeared that WV sat on them. Momentarily, ACP was heavily covered, so they quickly switched forms to a UT, an applaudably good call. The Viking’s form was revealed to be an A. WV had a bunched horizontal, while ACP has a clean form. At :49, ACP bombs and surrounds the iceberg, and WV waterfalls and forms a Z to conclude the room. For mostly neater forms, more coverage, well-executed defenses, and larger formations, WV wins overtime

A thrilling practice battle saw two major armies clash. The Water Vikings took the narrow victory, but the incredibly close fight proves both sides will be formidable opponents in the upcoming tournaments. How do you think these armies will continue to perform? What did you think of this practice battle? What are your opinions on the results?
