Overworked and Underpaid: Aucraia

Overworked and Underpaid is a series in which we spotlight designers from around the community, examining their paths of creation, experiences, and views on graphics. In this edition, we sit down with Aucraia to discuss his journey as a designer and the graphic connections he has formed during his time in the community.

Designed by Cassie

Aucraia started his journey into the world of digital art in 2019. He had a YouTube channel named Whitepuma, where he posted various amateur creations. Many of his works around this time were based on Five Nights at Freddy’s, ranging from animations that went along with FNAF music to illustrations inspired by the furry movement. While digitally primitive, these works were essential catalysts for discovering his passion for digital artistry and expression.

Aucraia posted, among other things, fan art and feature suggestions for Club Penguin Brasil, a very popular Club Penguin Private Server. Aucraia’s artworks for the server ranged from serious creative material to ridiculous posts. One of his earliest posts was a self-proclaimed “meme” visual storytelling feature, which originated from a real-life moment when he mistook a bottle of deodorant for a cup of water. This resulted in a very absurd encounter, but ultimately an oddly memorable design. While these were trivial happenings, they were examples of the nascent creative voice that Aucraia would continue to flourish in the years to come.

A Quick Chat With Aucraia

Club Penguin Armies reached out to Aucraia to learn more about his experience as an artist.

What do you believe was your most complex/difficult design? How did you overcome it?

I have honestly never made any complex designs. However, any animation requires a lot of patience. In fact, I am working on a 5 minute long project at the moment. To overcome the hurdle of doing it, I animate it in sections (first the intro, then the animation itself, then the outro) and take a lot of breaks. This helps me avoid getting tired or burnt out. Additionally, for simpler or fast movements, I do not do sketches, because no one’s gonna unironically pause and dig thru my animations for smear frames, so, honestly, why bother? (current progress of the animation attached below)

Are there any designs that you are exceptionally proud of? If so, which ones?

None, really. I like all of my recent art.

Looking back, what do you think about the growth and progress you have made regarding your designs?

I think I’m doing great. I learn new things about art every day, and I hope it continues like this.

A Round Of Advice

One: Nowadays, I do not feel like I need criticism from people I do not know online, and prefer not to listen to some 10 year old on YouTube saying my art is cringe or bad. I just ignore that. However, constructive criticism is important, and you need to learn when and how to listen to it and interpret it. Two: Develop your own style. You can take inspiration from anyone and everyone, anything and everything, but do not make it just a ripoff. You can be creative and make your art unique. What my art has that says “This is Aucraia’s art!” can also be in your art, saying “This is [your name]’s art!”. Basically, don’t plagiarize. Take inspiration, add your own twist. TLDR: Be creative. Art can not only be fun to do, but it can also be a way to put your ideas out for the world to see.

Aucraia’s journey through digital art is one of exciting uniqueness and inspiration. Moving from some FNAF animations, to CPPS fanart, to evolving into one of the strongest creative voices in the community. In a journey filled with humor, experimentation, and unapologetic self-expression, Aucraia has surprised himself. Now he is expanding his practice and evolving his creative voice. Which one of Aucraia’s works do you like the most? Where will he go next in his art journey?
