Overworked and Underpaid: Lemur

In Overworked And Underpaid, we aim to interview artists, learn more about them, and have them share their journey and advice. In this edition, we will sit down with Lemur and get to know how and when he became a cartoonist.

Lemur‘s journey in armies began in 2020, when he joined the Rebel Penguin Federation. Though he was inconsistent as a troop for a time, he joined the staff team in April 2022. After two years as staff, he joined RPF’s High Command, where he remains today. While in the RPF, he did work designing custom penguin graphics for people within the army. After some time, he decided to transfer his art skills to creating comics.

On November 16, 2023, Lemur applied to be a cartoonist for Club Penguin Armies, showcasing a custom penguin he made as part of his application. From there, he was quickly accepted into the team and started contributing to CPA Comics. His debut comic, published in February 2024, showed an army legend coming back to the community to take part in March Madness. Since then, he has been a mainstay on the cartoonist team, continuing to create high-quality comics up to this day. Lemur’s ability to emulate the Club Penguin style in his drawings makes his comics stand out.

A quick chat with Lemur

Club Penguin Armies sat down with Lemur to learn more about his time as a cartoonist.

What inspired you to start creating art and cartoons?

ive been drawing for a long time honestly so idk i guess its just a passion of mine, in recent months its been a thing ive wanted to pick up more due to ai becoming a bigger thing, i think having real artists known, recognised and out there is really important to keep it alive

Do you have a favourite cartoon that you have created?

its hard to say honestly i think all of my art is valuable to me in its own way

What is your least favourite part of the cartoon-creating process?

id say just coming up with ideas for creating them. every so often i get a strong idea or vision but it happens once in a blue moon and otherwise i need a lot of help finding inspiration to base ideas off

A round of advice

To finish the post, Club Penguin Armies asked Lemur if he had any advice for new people looking to get into art.

if youre looking to get into creating cartoons and art, as much as its a cliche answer just keep practicing. id recommend looking at artforms that you enjoy wether its animators you like the style of or different artists of different styles and mediums and just experimenting. the best way to find the thing you have a knack for is to expose yourself to everything you can find and just try it out. the most important thing is to find your sense of individuality and just have fun with it so if you have one or both of those ticked off then youll be good to go

As he is one of the longest-serving cartoonists for CPA, it was great to talk with Lemur and learn more about his artistic process. We hope he has inspired any potential cartoonists. What is your favourite comic of Lemur’s? What do you think is the hardest part of being a cartoonist? Who would you like to see interviewed next?
