Overworked and Underpaid: Wynn

In Overworked And Underpaid, we aim to interview designers, get to know more about them, and have them share their journey and design advice. Today we talked with former Chief Executive Producer, Wynn.

Designed by Cassie

Wynn began her career as a designer in the community during the Spring of 2021. She was enlisted in the Help Force and Ayan returned to leadership and was searching for designers. Finally feeling confident enough, she volunteered to help out, marking the beginning of her journey. In late 2022, she became an Administrator in Club Penguin Armies, and after noticing the workload on the Graphics department, stepped in to help. This experience taught her a lot and quickly helped her overcome her fears and grow more confident in herself and her designs.

The first trophy she ever designed was for Christmas Chaos XXIII in 2023. It was always on her bucket list to do one and this one ended up being her favorite! Additionally, during the rest of her time as a graphic designer, Wynn created multiple beautiful thumbnails for the reporting team while managing her responsibilities as a Chief Executive Producer.

A QUICK CHAT WITH Wynn

We sat down with Wynn for a quick interview about her journey as a graphic designer.

What would you say is the biggest challenge you have faced as a graphic designer?

I think generally designing something new, not just working on the “canvas” from original Club Penguin, starting from changing poses of custom penguins or drawing full clothing on them from scratch to designing something that wasn’t in CP at all, for example trophies. Other than that I just hate designing texts, I also don’t have a good software for that.

Also to be honest, starting learning to draw is the hardest part.

What inspired you to begin your journey in graphic design?

I tried a bit in middle school, but I wasn’t too successful, wanted to create content for a game I was playing back then. Then after joining armies, I just wanted a custom penguin lol, but knew I’ll sooner draw it myself than get somebody to do it for me (also asking people to commit their time to make gifts for me felt rude).

Can you share any advice you would give someone interested in graphic design?

Keep calm and remember that everything is ultimately made of lines and shapes of colour, and that’s not beyond your capability to draw. Work with a reference pic (e.x. a plain penguin) and you will get there. Other than that learn some basic things about the software because some can be hard to figure out on your own (make sure to check pen stabilisation too!)

Diving into the creative journeys of our talented designers is truly inspiring. We hope that exploring Wynn’s artistic talents has sparked your passion for design and creativity! Are you inspired to try designing? Which of Wynn’s designs is your favorite? Who would you like us to interview next?
