Picture Perfect: Army Battles Now And Then

Army battles define and shape the community as a whole, and throughout the last two decades, we’ve seen massive changes in how they occur. In this week’s Picture Perfect, we will be taking a deep dive into what defines battles and their components today compared to before in history.

The Snowball Struggle [2006-2009]

The first instances of battles ever occurring on Club Penguin were established by throwing snowballs at the enemy. The earliest example of these battles occurring was in World War I. Groups like Red, Green, and Blue had no central location to organize and receive information about these battles. This led to unorganized altercations by just throwing snowballs and taunting the enemy.

Color Wars – World War I

Due to the disorganized nature of armies in the early stages, there was no clear definition of what made a battle. It would usually simply be decided by who has more penguins online, and who threw snowballs the most. Simple mechanics like formations and tactics were never seen in this era, as armies were in their early stages.

Many massive wars also occurred in this stage, as armies slowly started shifting into a more organized battle system. Although there wasn’t much difference, most battles began happening in an arranged and aimed fashion. Armies moved past an era where they were generally referred to as clans, and tens to hundreds of armies were formed.

Glimpses of World War II

The Rise Of Armies [2010-2014]

Complexity within the idea of battles began to increase. Strategies in acquiring and invading servers began to be more popularized, as more wars revolved around maps and land. This made a turning point in armies’ outlining and strategies, as armies would invade enemy servers by bombarding them. These invasions would spread out through several of the server’s rooms to signify a successful server invasion. The invading army would march through all rooms in the server and claim each of them, while the defending army would do the same.

Glimpses of snowball fighting would still appear, however, armies shifted into an ordered battle system. Formations became a huge part of army events and battles, which turned battles into a more skill-based competition. Many infamous tournaments like the Legends Cup were created in this period, fueling the massive competitiveness in the community. All these factors shaped most of what the community was for the next several years.

Rising Standards [2015-2019]

This era of battles is when armies began to be a little more creative. Judging to Club Penguin Armies became mainstream and armies each year looked for ways to improve and enhance their battle skills. Speed, formation choices, and tactic creativity became common ideas of what defines battle brilliance. This era also saw the community shift from the original Club Penguin into the ongoing Private Servers era.

The intensity of these battles grew much higher. Tournaments and wars were regarded as the peak of an army’s performance, as each brought their best to the game. Size stopped being the biggest factor in winning battles, while speed also became an important aspect. It should also be noted that the massive transition of armies caused many armies to shut down, leaving a massive hole in army warfare and, therefore, forcing armies to reconstruct themselves completely once again.

As we move to present CPA, we could see a hefty amount of changes to what battles hold. Creativeness and strategic warfare skyrocketed through these years, making armies today a huge competitive zone. Many battles and wars within this era were politically driven, as the history between most armies was anything but positive. Many factors in battles were heavily studied and mastered by armies, as things such as bombs now see many alternatives. Army practicing became a testing ground for many new ideas that make battles a little more interesting.

This era was essentially a massive race into battle perfection as the judging system became officialized, and with each battle, armies grew stronger. Tournaments continued being the largest performance for battle brilliance bigger than ever, while wars slowly lost their frequency and competitive nature.

The extreme growth of formation inventions and creativity was imminent, as armies let their ideas go wild when creating them. Formations were a strong factor in judging battles, so armies trained to master them. Ultimately, the quality of formations became one of the three largest factors in battles, alongside speed and size.

ACP’s Delta Division Inauguration

Although we’ve seen the massive upbringing of battle strategy and philosophy and the intricate mechanics and studies brought into the heat of the game, it is sufficient to say that we have not yet seen the cream of the crop in this field. Armies today still look for ways to outperform everyone else and practice and study for better techniques and approaches. With all the battle mechanics at hand today, it is only a matter of time until we see something new brought to the table. Do you think battles today are more exciting than before, or the opposite? What’s something you miss dearly from battles before?
