For a significant time in army history, meme armies have always been around to spice up the community. But how has the development of meme armies impacted armies as we know them today? In this exploration, we shall dive into the various perspectives on meme armies and clarify their true impact on the culture here.
Beginning of meme armies
Meme armies date back to January 2015, when the first documented meme army was the Ayy Lmao Army, created by Small/Medium Legend Sidie9 and Myma001. Primarily, this army began as a joke among friends, serving as a fun hub for their group. They seized on what was a silly meme at the time, embracing it through the dynamics of a Club Penguin Army. Setting the meme into stone, they created a separate chat for the friend group on Xat. This is where they would organize rather laid-back, fun events on Old Club Penguin, one of the first Club Penguin Private Servers.
This was a culture that evolved and became widespread throughout the community predominantly. To continue this exploration, let’s consider the evolution of meme armies and their unique role in the army community. Since their early days, these armies have held an important, albeit unconventional, position. They add a layer of humor and creativity that diverges from the more serious, competitive landscape of traditional armies.
Why CREATE MEME ARMIES?
First of all, meme armies have always emerged out of the desire to make the army community more entertaining. A way for members of the community to bond over shared memes, internet culture, and inside jokes for the community’s shenanigans. By embracing a mild level of absurdity, meme armies allow members to reinforce the notion that Club Penguin armies are not limited to traditional battles and events. This brought together members from all over the army community. Thus, meme armies have always primarily relied on dual-enlisted troops.
Over the years, the community has witnessed the evolution of how we formed meme armies. The culture of various individuals settling upon a common sense of humor was always an aspect that remained the same. There’s the Bose DK Warriors who emerged from inside jokes between friends, to the Wet Army Penguins and Dua Inn Lipa Fighters who were born from the appreciation of songs/music stars. There are even notable armies such as the Squids of Club Penguin and the Herberts of Club Penguin, who seized themes within the game itself to embrace.
While these armies continue to enclasp the lighthearted and absurd nature of their origins, they’ve also adapted to incorporate elements of traditional army culture. They participate in battles, and engage in fun events, just like any army would. However, they add a layer of fun and excitement by theming their tactics around humor that resonates with the community. In addition, an example of this is my waged war against the Templars back in 2022 with my army, the Bose DK Warriors. The community enjoyed the curry-themed copypastas and tactics that emerged from what we represented as a meme army.
This laid-back approach of Club Penguin warfare allowed penguins to remain competitive while encouraging a playful atmosphere. This results in a culture that honors certain roots of CP Armies and dynamically evolves while avoiding the traditionalism that restricts other armies. This is the overall reason why many of us take the initiative to form such armies.
Do meme armies add value to the community?
Many debate the question of whether meme armies are a waste of time and space. Some argue that they dilute the commitment level within armies, potentially impacting troop loyalty. However, the existence of meme armies constantly contributes to a more vibrant community atmosphere. The escape from the rigidity of a rank-oriented system is appealing to many. In some cases, it has led to innovations that many larger armies have now adopted. This is reflected in the many “theme weeks” armies regularly host. These themes strengthen engagement within each army’s community.
Furthermore, I have witnessed meme armies serve as a testing ground in many aspects. Since they are not bound by the same expectations as more established armies, they have the freedom to experiment in a range of fields. I have personally viewed this as I have trained multiple staff members in leading battles throughout my army. With fewer expectations, individuals are able to effectively learn crucial skills easily, without the stress of pressure, forging the leaders of today.
In my extensive experience with meme armies, I also learnt they have a unique way of bringing people together on a shared foundation of humour. This is something that might not have connected us otherwise. I’ve been fortunate to engage with various meme armies. From creating my own Bose DK Warriors to advising the Wet Army Penguins and Scars of Club Penguin. I even served as a Leader in Training for the Dua Inn Lipa Fighters. Alongside these roles, I’ve additionally formed friendships with the worshippers in the Church of Aurora.
These experiences have granted me close and valuable friendships that remain with me to this day. This is an effect that I am certain is similar for others across the community. Through laughter and shared jokes, meme armies have fostered a sense of camaraderie that transcends ranks and competitive battles. This proves that sometimes, humor can be the strongest bond of all, bringing the community together. How has meme armies contributed to your journey in armies? Would you start your own meme army?
