Overworked and Underpaid: Rye Bread

In Overworked And Underpaid, we aim to interview designers, learn more about them, and have them share their journey and design advice. In this edition, we sat down with Rye Bread and get to know how and when they became a graphic designer.

Overworked and Underpaid: Rye Bread

Designed by Cassie

Rye Bread always had an interest in traditional art while growing up, often drawing in her spare time. However, her journey into graphic design did not begin until she joined the Special Weapons and Tactics. Starting with simple banners for the server, Rye Bread quickly realized the need for high-quality graphics in the army community.

As she became more involved, her skills expanded, particularly when she created designs for Penguins of Madagascar, where graphics were needed for the army. Looking back, Rye Bread acknowledges her early work with humor while also recognizing how much she has improved since then.

Later, Rye Bread joined the Water Vikings and applied for the graphic design team, thus further honing her craft. Over time, she produced a variety of designs, including banners, thumbnails and even other fun drawings for the Water Vikings. The first ever thumbnail that she made for Club Penguin Armies was a graphic marking Aisha’s induction as a Secret Service leader, a piece that represents the beginning of her CPA design journey.

A QUICK CHAT WITH RYE BREAD

Club Penguin Armies approached Rye Bread for a quick interview about their time as a designer.

What was the biggest challenge you faced when learning graphic design, and how did you overcome it?

Getting the lines straight 😭 I usually did traditional art so I tried doing it that way at the start, only using the brush tool and not using layers or recolor but eventually I got there, still learning tho

Is there a specific design or project you’re most proud of? If so, what makes it special to you?

I really like the anniversary poster I did (top) and I’m working on some custom penguins which will probably be my best work yet. I also liked these two I did for cpa (bottom two)

How do you think Club Penguin army graphics have evolved over time, and where do you see them going in the future?

as for CPA league i hope we can start to use more detail in the future but overall i feel like the “style” for cpa graphics have stayed the same the past few years and will continue to be in that style.

tho i do like the cpa league style more than the thumbnails from like cpahq and before

A ROUND OF ADVICE

To wrap this post, Club Penguin Armies asked Rye Bread to give some advice for the new people who want to get into graphic design.

Yeah! Keep working hard on your art because itll always get better, each time you do it you learn more and thats what builds your skill.

It was great to get to sit down with Rye Bread and learn more about their journey. It is always exciting to watch new designers emerge, and that is exactly what she has done since joining the community. Thank you, Rye Bread, for your dedication and your valuable contributions to the Club Penguin Armies graphics team! What do you think inspired Rye Bread to pursue a career as a graphic designer? Are there any designs you’d like to see in the future? Who would you like to see join the graphics team?
