Welcome to This Day In History, a column that links today with the past, reminiscing upon significant events on this date in previous years. In this edition, we go back four years, to when the Water Troops announced their official shutdown to the community.
army origins
Formed in November 2009 by Keano73, the Water Troops have witnessed thirteen generations across the years. They are most known for their third generation when they merged into the Water Vikings alongside the Masked Vikings. Their original Club Penguin era ended with their tenth generation in 2016. In the Club Penguin Private Server era, the Water Troops reopened with their eleventh generation under the leadership of Games on Club Penguin Rewritten in May 2020.
SHUTDOWN
Their twelfth generation, under Lukey’s leadership, was as shortlived as the eleventh when they merged into the Tamales of Club Penguin in August of that year. Following the Tamales’ dramatic shutdown, Lukey reopened the army for a thirteenth generation alongside TD999 in October 2020. In this generation, they operated with a respectable size of 10 to 15 troops in attendance. On December 14, Games announced the shutdown of the army, marking the army’s final days.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Aside from fathering the Water Vikings, an army that has certainly left a significant legacy, WT has made multiple honourable attempts in tournaments across the years. They have participated in the fifth edition of the Legends Cup tournament, alongside the Small/Medium Army Central Down III, where they lost both to the Metal Warriors, with whom they declared war. However, they won the Summer Clash 2014 first round against the Royale Penguins. However, they were knocked out in the second round by the Redemption Force.
December 14 four years ago was definitely eventful. Members of the army community are no strangers to such twists and turns in armies. How do you feel about the Water Troops’ shutdown? Do you think they would soon make a return? How has their legacy affected you?
