Flag Frenzy #2 – Winged Hussars

Ever since the Winged Hussars returned, the army brought back its uniqueness, making it one of the most interesting Small/Medium armies in the Private Server era. In their existence, they have made a lot of flags and also made use of a lot of symbols. In this episode of Flag Frenzy, we will be looking at the meaning behind the Hussars’ flags.

Flags and Army Identity

Flags are an essential part of geopolitics. Especially in terms of national identity, they play a crucial role. In this case, it would be more appropriate to refer to it as ‘army identity’. Nevertheless, flags can be a strong symbol indicating the connection of an individual to the greater group. This being part of something is essential for an army’s unity and also performance. Hence, flags have great potential in shaping the identity of an army, particularly in establishing a sense of pride. But also for the formation of hate against the foe, they can be effective.

Most times, flags are overlooked as just a small part that makes up the army as a whole. Usually disregarded, they are likely the first thing individuals will associate with and note about a particular army. Members of an army, often have been confronted by various means of symbolism used in such a context. They have likely felt the impact symbols can have in a community, even for a community as small and niche as a Club Penguin army.

FIRST FLAG (January – April 2019)

First flag of the Winged Hussars

This is the first flag of the Winged Hussars. It is the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth flag. There isn’t much meaning behind it apart from the fact Winged Hussars were from it.

SECOND FLAG (APRIL – NOVEMBER 2019)

The second flag used by WH

This is the second flag for the Winged Hussars, it was designed by Shinzo. The flag is a rectangular flag that draws inspiration from the original design. It incorporates a modern-day Lithuanian flag between each red-white border to symbolize Poland and Lithuania. At the center, the coat of arms is influenced by the Polish coat of arms, featuring a golden border and the addition of a winged hand and sword to honor the historical Winged Hussars and their uniform. The flag’s colors are a blend of those found on the Polish and Lithuanian flags, signifying unity between the two nations and reflecting the duality of history and modernity, as depicted by the historical PLC flag base with the modern-day Lithuanian flags.

THIRD FLAG (October 2023 – Current)

The current and most recent Winged Hussars flag

The current flag of the Winged Hussars is the third version, designed by Shinzo and Ripmam. The flag features vibrant colors that make it visually striking. The border of the coat of arms now matches the distinctive Lithuanian yellow, while the inner section of the coat of arms is adorned with the same bold red as the redesigned version.

Club Penguin Armies reached out to Winged Hussars’ leader, Shinzo, regarding the creation of his army’s flag.

As we formerly used the flag of the PLC as our flag, I thought it was appropriate to design something similar, but also simpler. Since the oroginal colours are heavily Polish (at least in the modern sense), we included a modern-day Lithuanian flag. This combined history with modernity. Together with the coat of arms, it just tied together the WH’s inspiration and identity on top.

The current flag is just a better version of the previous. I’ve come up with the general base, with Ripmam doing a big part in the process as well. It was a joint effort.

The Hussars seemed to have interesting flag choices, all inspired by the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth flag. What are your thoughts on the Hussars’ vexillology?
